About
Peter Gene Hernandez — known worldwide as Bruno Mars — was born on October 8, 1985, in Honolulu, Hawaii, into a family of performers. His father Pete was a Latin percussionist of Puerto Rican heritage, and his mother Bernadette was a Filipino vocalist and hula dancer. Nicknamed "Bruno" as a toddler by his father, who thought he resembled wrestler Bruno Sammartino, he was performing as an Elvis impersonator with his family's band The Love Notes by the age of four. After graduating high school in Honolulu, Mars moved to Los Angeles in 2003 to pursue a professional music career. After being dropped by Motown Records, he co-founded the songwriting and production team The Smeezingtons, writing hits for Flo Rida, CeeLo Green, and others before stepping into the spotlight himself. His 2010 debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans spawned the global No. 1 single "Just the Way You Are." His 2012 follow-up Unorthodox Jukebox continued his genre-blending approach with hits like "Locked Out of Heaven" and "When I Was Your Man." His 2016 album 24K Magic — a love letter to 1990s R&B and funk — swept the 2018 Grammy Awards, winning Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. In 2014, his collaboration with Mark Ronson on "Uptown Funk" spent 14 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time. In 2021, he formed the retro-soul duo Silk Sonic with Anderson .Paak, releasing "Leave the Door Open," which won four Grammy Awards. His collaborations with Rosé ("APT.") and Lady Gaga ("Die With a Smile") in 2024–2025 dominated global charts. His fourth solo album The Romantic was released in 2026. Mars plays piano, guitar, bass, and drums, and is renowned as one of the greatest live performers of his generation. He has sold over 150 million records worldwide and won 16 Grammy Awards, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
