Calum Scott was born on October 12, 1988, in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, and grew up in North Ferriby and Kingston upon Hull. Originally a drummer, he was encouraged to sing by his sister Jade — herself a talented vocalist — which set him on the path to becoming one of the UK's most beloved singer-songwriters. Before his rise to fame, Scott worked as a recruitment consultant at Hull City Council and performed as the lead singer of Maroon 4, a Maroon 5 tribute band. He won the Hull Daily Mail's Star Search local talent competition in 2013 and had even performed in a choir for the Queen at Buckingham Palace. In April 2015, Scott auditioned for Britain's Got Talent Season 9 with a stripped-back, piano-led cover of Robyn's "Dancing on My Own," which he had discovered through Kings of Leon's BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge performance. The audition earned him a standing ovation and Simon Cowell's Golden Buzzer — Cowell declaring Calum "more than a singer, an artist." The audition video went on to amass over 400 million YouTube views. Despite finishing sixth in the competition, he had built enough of a following to leave his day job and pursue music full-time. Scott signed with Capitol Records and in March 2016 released "Dancing on My Own" as his debut single, peaking at No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart and becoming Britain's best-selling single of summer 2016. His 2017 single "You Are the Reason" — a deeply personal ballad about unconditional love — surpassed one billion views on YouTube. His debut album Only Human was released in March 2018 and peaked at No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart. His second album Bridges (2022) featured the empowering singles "Biblical" and "Rise," while his third album Avenoir (2025) explored themes of memory, healing, and love. Scott is openly gay, a passionate advocate for mental health awareness and LGBTQ+ rights, and has donated performance proceeds to mental health charity Mind.
